human factors is…
Humans + Systems
The science of understanding how people actually interact with a system.
Designing that interaction for overall system performance and human well-being.
humans : Perception, attention, memory, fatigue, stress.
Not the ideal user of the spec sheet.
The real one, at the end of a night shift, with three alarms going off.
systems : Interfaces, procedures, tools, environments.
Everything the person has to work with, and everything the work depends on.
Human factors optimises performances for both sides :
well-being for the people and for the system.
We always fit the system to the human.
Never the human to the system.
___________
the story — there is no such thing as human error
you know these situations
The alarm that everyone ignores because it goes off ten times a day for nothing.
The procedure everyone works around because it was written for a system that no longer exists.
The interface where a single wrong click has consequences no one can undo.
Investigations call it human error. We call it design fail.
Behind almost every "operator mistake" hides an interface that demanded attention it didn't get, a procedure that ignored the real work, a system designed for a human that doesn't exist.
Human factors & ergonomics closes the gap between the work as imagined and the work as done.
___________
4. our approach — how we get there
We don't start with interfaces.
We start with the field, where the work actually happens.
activity analysis
We observe the work where it happens: the procedures, the real tasks, the decisions, the mental workload, the little workarounds nobody talks about, the way the team organises itself. We analyse the gap between the task as prescribed and the activity as performed.
standards
Grounded in ISO 9241 standards and its human-centred design process.
We build products that are easy to use, fast to adopt and effective.
heuristic frameworks
The ergonomic criteria of Bastien & Scapin, the heuristics of Jakob Nielsen, the eight golden rules of Shneiderman. Proven frameworks to quickly spot what slows usage down, prioritise corrections, and evaluate interfaces with rigor.
biotracking & evaluation
Some things users can't tell you. Eye-tracking to see where attention really goes, EEG and BPM to measure cognitive load and stress. We evaluate with data from the body, not just from interviews.
complex & critical systems
We design for contexts that don't accept error: air traffic, defence, industrial operations, critical processes. Security constraints, no room for approximation. We start by understanding the métier, then we design interfaces that reduce mental workload and secure the action.
5. what you get
what you walk away with
An analysis of real activity, not assumed usage
Interfaces evaluated against recognised standards and frameworks
Objective measures: attention, workload, task time, error rates
Designs that secure critical actions and reduce mental workload
And systems where safety and performance stop competing
6. outcomes
why it matters
safety
Fewer errors, fewer incidents — because the system finally matches human capabilities.
performance
30% less task time on satellite assembly. Real gains, measured in the field.
well-being
Lower mental workload means sharper attention, longer focus, healthier work.
adoption
Tools that fit the way people actually work get used. The others get worked around.
7. expertises — human factors doesn't live alone
it connects to the rest of what we do
